Nancy Mace’s entire D.C. office has turned over since Nov. 1. Former staff members described a “toxic” work culture driven by a “delusional” boss.

Add another ignoble credential to Rep. Nancy Mace’s résumé.

As of Monday, according to three sources familiar with the matter, Mace’s entire D.C. staff has turned over since Nov. 1, 2023.

Former staffers who spoke with The Daily Beast on the condition of anonymity, however, told a very different story.

“The member was abusive,” one former senior staffer told The Daily Beast, specifically pointing to the frequency with which Mace would communicate with her staff, either over text, Signal, or Monday.com—an unauthorized software system Mace uses in her office.

This former staffer said Mace uses the software to “micromanage the office all day and into the night and early morning.”

“Nancy is delusional as a boss,” the former staffer continued. “She says nothing publicly without her consultants or senior staffers telling her to, but takes credit for everything. She’s a walking teleprompter.”

The former staffer added that Mace “has no idea what it actually means to be a member of Congress and is too scared and self-conscious to deal with other people, so she accomplished nothing.”

During her three years in office, Mace has had one bill signed into law: a measure renaming a post office on Hilton Head Island.

I always double check, but you are correct. Dems want a functional government; GOPs want to win the next election.

Not to mention, the connection to Hilton Head. That place still calls its neighborhoods “plantations.”

It seems Republican staff cannibalization would even involve a popcorn machine, folks:

Staffers had no idea why Khatod had called Capitol Police on Hanlon—it could have been over Hanlon taking an office popcorn machine on his way out—but many former employees were disturbed by the incident.

“At that moment, I felt the most unsafe I ever had on the Hill, when I realized she was using the Capitol Police to intimidate staff,” one witness to the event told The Daily Beast.

But the craziest part, aside from conservative toxicity, would be her accomplishments in three years of office: the signing of a measure to rename a post office.

I used to work in politics in DC and there’s always a few Congresspeople who everyone knows is a psycho boss. It’s not always covered by the press but it probably should be. Staff turnover means something.

Not always something bad, obviously. Like a retiring congressperson will have staff turnover because staffers know their jobs are ending. Mitt Romney could be a good boss helping his staffers find new jobs. But I remember Sen. Amy Klobuchar having issues with staff turnover and there was no obvious reason. And people would just say she’s “very demanding.”

Then she ran for president and this came out: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/22/us/politics/amy-klobuchar-staff.html

If you don’t know how to get around paywalls, the article starts with:

Senator Amy Klobuchar was hungry, forkless and losing patience.

An aide, joining her on a trip to South Carolina in 2008, had procured a salad for his boss while hauling their bags through an airport terminal. But once onboard, he delivered the grim news: He had fumbled the plastic eating utensils before reaching the gate, and the crew did not have any forks on such a short flight.

What happened next was typical: Ms. Klobuchar berated her aide instantly for the slip-up. What happened after that was not: She pulled a comb from her bag and began eating the salad with it, according to four people familiar with the episode.

Then she handed the comb to her staff member with a directive: Clean it.
