Have you ever met someone who was a renowned sloppy drunk who would just be generally awful any time they started? Like the alcohol gives them carte blanche to be an asshole because it’s a bit of social cover?
Same thing here. Religion is (very much) not for me, but I can see how people could use it to foster a sense of community and self-reflection. But some people use it as an excuse to be their worst selves, and instead of using that magnifying glass to examine their (and frankly the Bible’s) morality, they use it to burn and scar the people around them.
The religion is the cover that they use, just like the nasty drunk used alcohol.
