    1. I don’t think anyone really says that. Most people people in the mainstream would say that religion has a place in many people’s personal lives, just not in legislation.

    2. Saying that people should face consequences for harmful things they say is not the same as opposing free speech.

    3. The mainstream still thinks that society is a meritocracy, it’s only leftists who’d say that success is primarily based on luck (with birth being a major element of that, because it determines your place on a lot of privilege scales such as economic, racial, gender, and many more)

    4. You literally can change the world without cleaning your room. Do you think they hold bedroom inspections for everyone before they’re given power? “Hold on, Mr. Putin, you can’t declare war on Ukraine: your bedroom isn’t tidy enough.”

  • There’s no limit on when an abortion is or isn’t ethical. If the foetus is developed enough that it’s possible to induce early birth (without risking the parent), I think that should be done (so that would cover your 8.9 month example), but in general the parent has the right to change their mind on the pregnancy at any time.

I don’t think 1984 is supposed to be a critique of socialism - more a critique of authoritarianism. Ingsoc is socialist in the same way that nazis are - in name only. Animal Farm is more about socialism that 1984 is, and I think its message is that authoritarians can use socialist rhetoric to gain power and then turn around and start exploiting the working class just like capitalists (as we see in the real world in China, Russia, and a lot of state capitalism in general) rather than something like “socialism bad”. All in all, I don’t think Orwell was anti-socialist, I think he was anti-authoritarian, which is why some of his books were banned in both the US and USSR.
