i foud out about this place a few days ago… upon arriving i saw some misinformation spreading around. I called dit out and the response has been bullying name calling and being told to leave he site. is this what lemmy is?
Just wanna check before I go…
You’re a new account who shows up and immediately starts arguing with people and insisting your interpretation is the only correct one. And you keep fighting and fighting and fighting long after you have anything new to add. Frankly you come across as the bully or at least you hold no moral high ground.
And I say this as someone unafraid to call out the zeitgeist when I think they are wrong. I take my downvotes when it happens and I engage honestly and respectfully with people I disagree with. I don’t think I’ve ever had a comment deleted.
So it’s not that you’re being censored for your views, but because you’re an asshole about them in places that don’t tolerate that. And frankly I would rather an asshole on “my” team be censored than someone I can disagree respectfully with.
Food for thought. Come back when you’re ready, if you want.
This whole thing reeks of “I came here, acted perfectly reasonably and logically, and everyone else, astoundingly, was illogical and mean to me. I’m so smugly innocent. I’m the victim. This makes no sense!”
Not one bit of self-reflection.
Is there an archetype or myth about this behavior? There must be. Some type of ironic “innocent” contrarian? The little brother who provokes then runs to mommy to tattle?
It’s trying to gain sympathy by playing a victim. I’m sure there’s a term for it.
In the US I think the term you’re looking for is “republican”.
Btw, if you look at the thread in question where you were called out for being wrong, all the comments name-calling and bullying you were removed. Moderation doesn’t work instantly.
I went back and looked at the interaction. You said what you thought, other people said what they thought. That’s how the internet works. What, are you requesting that no one be allowed to disagree with you but you be allowed to speak your mind?
Speaking as someone who regularly gets irritated at the moderation / the hivemind, and occasionally argues with ACAB people because I am, more or less, pro police, I think your argument was wrong in this case. But that’s not even really the point. The bottom line is, people are allowed to disagree with you, even have a consensus against you. Why would they not?
before ya go, ‘lemmy’ is a software package used by many, many different server-instances with their own moderation levels. its not a ‘site’ so much as an ecosystem.
for example, youve posted this to lemmy.ml, one of the most heavy handed of the instances with regards to moderation. you should try out other instances like lemmy.world or even other products that get you the same data with less moderation (https://moist.catsweat.com)
youve just dipped your foot in the pool, dont leave because of a few mosquitos
Misinformation on news, and any person that tries to corrects it gets bullied outta there… ain’t a small thing though.
I would say that is quite a big thing. Specifically.news subs.
I think I was on world but still figuring it out. Thanks!
You were just given the correct answer but you are too butthurt to hear it. Lemmy isn’t a site. Lemmy isn’t run by a single corporate overlord with homogenous rules. Lemmy is just software and part of an ecosystem that is comprised of many different instances. What you are saying equates to “People reacted poorly to my tweet. Why is HTTP so toxic?!?”.
If you want a safer version of Lemmy, try Beehaw.org. If you want a bigger server that is closer to Reddit, try lemmy.world.
EDIT: Autocorrect sucks.
Lemmy is a federated space. You can join an instance where your views are more in-line with the other users, or you can stay and expect to get pushback.
That’s the cool thing about Lemmy, it’s not a single thing, it’s a federation of many smaller spaces with different focuses, interests, vibes, etc.
But heads up, if you are defending the cop in Illinois that slaughtered that woman in her house, you’re either completely clueless of American policing (which would make sense given that you’re not from here) or you are a nasty cop-simp.
The cop got slapped with multiple charges. Even his own department thought it was fucked what he did, which is rare because pigs generally like to wallow together in the same shit.
Maybe you were dead wrong and you aren’t as smart as you think you are? 🤷♂️
Smart?
It’s not even a question of smartness… Lol
Unable to read a room… I feel this may be more accurate, then the word smart.
If you’re too dumb to understand you’re wrong, smartness does play into it.
Not acceptimg you’re wrong is a whole other personality issue.
wrt the “”“misinformation”“” you called out:
When a cop feels unsafe you should flop bonelessly to the ground so they can establish dominance, it’s the only way to survive.
Literally just lots of people making stuff up.
In that example that she wasn’t touching the pot of boiling water when he shot and many more.
They told her go move the pot of water, so she complied. The murder was across the room, and only when lightly rebuked did he opt to pull his gun and charge toward her, shouting that he would “put a fucking bullet in her face.”
She immediately started apologizing and dropped to the ground. The murderer then fired 3 shots at her, with one piercing her face and throat.
Since the murderer illegally didn’t have his camera on, it’s hard to tell if the scared woman was holding the pot of water when she dropped to the ground in fear. It is easy to tell, thanks to his partner’s bodycam, that he was in no danger when she made a mild comment in her own home while committing no crimes, at which point she was brutally murdered.
Actually they released his camera footage (and I tortured myself by watching it.)
Content Warning: Pigs being pigs
Slow the video to .25x speed at 10:40 to see it in her hands, the open mouth facing towards him as she jumps up.
This doesn’t justify the shoot though! He was advancing on her with his gun drawn and screaming after she did everything he told her to do! Normal people are not trained on what to do when a butcher comes to your house and starts escalating the situation.
He wasn’t in fear for his life. He just wanted to murder someone.
Can we agree he wasn’t in fear for his life?
You wanted to find an argument and you did. Now you want to cry that nobody agreed with you?
Get the fuck outta here.
Of course one single terrible interaction with one person of a group of people immediately means that the whole group is completely terrible.
So yes, you should leave while you can, try to get far far away from us homogeneous Lemmings ;)
Check their comments, they had a pretty bad run-in with the .ml-crowd. You know, stating controversial opinions on a US-politics community. Never a great idea.
The vast majority of the comments were not only negative, but attacking.
I didn’t see a single supporting comment, or someone messaging me condemning that bullying behaviour. It was 90% +.
On news subs. Worrying.
You should reevaluate if you think disagreement is bullying. Disagreement feels like bullying because being wrong is one of the worst things that could happen to our psyche. Because people on the “wrong side” were often attacked and killed throughout history. But in a more enlightened culture, that we’re trying to rationally work towards, being wrong and people disagreeing should and needs to be fine. It still feels unpleasant of course, but disagreement and hostile behavior needs to be distinguished.
So, lemmy isn’t just one site. If you had a bad experience on one instance, by all means leave and go to another one.
Hm… I find it interesting to see people argue in favour of echo chambers.
In today’s world… that kinda baffling b
The above is saying that Lemmy is not monolithic and if you find one instance an echo chamber there are other instances that may be more to your liking.
Thank you, yes. I can kinda see how OP took it wrong, but this is exactly what I meant. We don’t need to put up with echo chambers any more.
Being the only person on one side of a conversation doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in an echo chamber. It could also just mean that you’re wrong.
Actually, lemmy’s communities tends to be way more laid back than reddit or twitter. It’s a small social network, even when counting the whole fediverse, and you always see known face on their alt accounts.
Just avoid trolling and go too far in the politics/news section
No
There’s some nice people here and reasoned discussion, but there is a dog pile mentality sometimes that’s way worse than reddit ever was. And it was bad enough.
Checking your comments you seem to have had a run-in with the ML-crowd. Lemmy generally has a plethora of “leftist” (if you restrict your political compass to one dimension) communities, although the variety is immense. Let’s just say there is some … unfriendly turf here on the Fediverse. Plenty of people on the German communities avoid .ml communities.
I consider it to be the price of diversity. Due to the lack of central moderation (except on authoritarianism-loving instances), communities are much more self-regulating. On better (aka not US-politics) communities people tend to simply disagree or discuss, but rarely go beyond that.

Which is highly populated by .ml (such as you, which is not an inherently negative thing) and people that probably come from that line of thinking. Tbf I did not check what instance the people in question were on, so you are right for calling me out on simply assuming so. Regardless, OP was posting somewhat controversial statements and was met with a crowd that considers the statements “police officers are humans, too” to be controversial.
That’s the current state of humanity on and offline. We deserve to die as a species.
