Summary
Senator Bernie Sanders warns that Trump’s administration is turning away from America’s 250-year democratic tradition and embracing authoritarianism.
Trump recently voted against a UN resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, siding with authoritarian regimes rather than traditional US allies.
Sanders highlights Trump’s alignment with Putin, whom he describes as having “crushed Russia’s movement towards democracy” and committed war crimes in Ukraine.
Beyond Ukraine, Sanders criticizes Trump’s statements about annexing territories and forcing Palestinians from Gaza.
He frames this as a crucial historical turning point where Americans must defend democracy against a retreat into “oligarchy, authoritarianism, colonialism.”
Too late.
This is a turning point – a moment of enormous consequence in world history. Do we go forward toward a more democratic, just and humane world? Or do we retreat back into oligarchy, authoritarianism, colonialism and the rejection of international law?
As Americans, we cannot stay quiet as Trump abandons centuries of our commitment to democracy. Together, we must fight for our long-held values and work with people around the world who share them.
This is what people need to be saying to the “others”. Regardless of your political beliefs, you either stand with people who want to continue in a democracy, or you’re against them. Forget all the bullshit they are trying to distract you with, and focus on this one simple thing, because you’re about to lose all of it and didn’t lift a finger.
Rather America must IMPROVE its democratic values. Voting on a workday? In a country with no mandated PTO? Gerrymandering? Electoral college? Real democracy at scale probably has never existed, but this is not it for sure.

Omg finally, a call to action. I’m ready! Let’s fucking go! What are we doing, Bernie? Economic boycott? General strike? What’s the plan?

God damn it.
All the protests and boycotts so far this year haven’t had the wide publicity necessary to break through before a resounding “we were supposed to be doing what three days ago?”
I think Sanders is mustering resources. It’s a hunch, but we’ve heard a lot in the past month or so from Sanders and AOC. I think the leaders of the progressive wing are in the recruitment phase for something.
I really hope they are, at least.
All the protests and boycotts so far this year haven’t had the wide publicity necessary to break through
That’s precisely my point. All the protests and boycotts so far have come from random social media posts and not marshaled, amplified or organized by people who are actually in roles of leadership… like Bernie, or AOC, or the Human Rights Campaign, or the ACLU.
People are pissed and ready for action, and our leaders aren’t offering specific guidance. It’s so frustrating.
Perhaps read the rest of the comment.
This is as close to leadership and a plan that I’ve seen so far. My observation (and fear) is that Democrats are bereft of ideas and incapable of leading. I don’t know what we do when there’s no one at the helm.
Kinda hard to lead when people don’t give you enough power to do anything or the faintest of majorities meaning big action is basically impossible.
Unlike Bernie, most Dems are beholden to their donors who are perfectly fine with these changes. Establishment Dems will not help us through this crisis.
Yeah the best bet then is sticking your head in the sand, not primarying those dems, then refusing to vote for whatever dem wins the primary.
That strategy is clearly working really well right now.
Not necessarily directed at you but the same people screaming for the dems to do something refuse to basically do the bare minimum themselves.
Well, progressives are used to not having power. Instead of having to feign helplessness like democrats do every time we give them a majority to squander.
Sanders’ critique of the Democratic Party is valid, but where’s the actionable plan?

What democratic values? The US has been an oligarchy from the beginning, it’s just mask off now.
An important message indeed, but I can’t help but feel it’s delivered too late.
It’s not the first time this has been said to the american people. But it needs to be repeated until enough listen. If it can be spoken about publicly it’s not too late.
Comments on Lemmy are so defeatist. This feels like the most depressing place on the internet sometimes
it needs to be repeated until enough listen
exactly. the fascists put in the hard propaganda work for the past 40 years. yesterday is gone but today, and every future day, is the second best time to pull up and push back.
Remove the references to trump and this has been Bernie’s message for a long time.
Those that listen to him got it in plenty of time.
The problem is, the mentally blind people that voted for this administration weren’t ever going to hear that message, much less comprehend it.
