I’ve had lots of issues in the past with Ubuntu LTS’s having random system crashes, etc., that kept me away from using linux as my daily driver for work and personal use.
I saw a recommendation for KDE Neon, and it just works. I don’t pretend to know what kind of black magic these devs have used in their basements, but I’ve used it for a week and haven’t experienced a single crash or other oddity (something that would happen almost daily on Ubuntu). Works out of the box, looks okay, and performs wonderfully. That’s all I really have to say. Anyone else have recent experience with KDE Neon and want to share?
I’ve used Kubuntu for the longest but the upgrades almost always brought issues/bugs. I switched to Manjaro and I think is a better well put distro. AUR also makes a huge difference since I no longer have to hunt for .debs, executables, or PPAs.
Manjaro is a great distro!
Super strange that you had issues with Ubuntu but not KDE Neon, which AFAIK is based on Ubuntu.
But if you like KDE, then Manjaro KDE is also a good choice IMHO.
It really is strange. Since Ubuntu was always parsing me strange fatal errors, I was expecting more of the same since Neon is an ubuntu fork. But nope!
Is not an Ubuntu fork but their repositories are the same with the exception of these dedicated to KDE software AFAIK.
I mean, Ubuntu has had some really shitty KDE setups in the past (assuming OP used Kubuntu back then). Mostly caused by their fixed release schedule not aligning very well with KDE releases, and them keeping old Qt releases alive, back when they were still working on Unity 8.
KDE Neon and Kubuntu (Ubuntu + KDE Plasma as the DE) are basically the same thing, barring some minor differences. They’re both Ubuntu with KDE Plasma as the DE, just maintained by different teams. It’s possible whatever caused the crashes before either got fixed in the meantime or was related to Gnome, vanilla Ubuntu’s default DE.
I also really like Plasma and think it’s a great DE, particularly for Windows refugees, and I don’t really like Gnome’s UI/UX, it’s a bit weird for me, but it’s nonetheless a good DE too. More a matter of taste than anything, I guess.
Neon does look super cool!
I prefer Gnome over KDE. maybe worth a try for you?
I’ve had a lot of experience with Gnome, and I can’t really say I’m a fan.
to be honest, as a daily wm, i use i3. But when it comes to fancyness, gnome is my favorite.
Agreed. GNOME tries to change with the times. While other DE’s try to stick to their old ways, GNOME is not afraid to reflect the design features that are modern.
