Like the title states looking for E2EE apps (Android and iOS) without going into much details or needs to be robust enough and easy to use for anyone and stable for operations that are susceptible to constant electronic warfare. I did some research and thought about replacing Signal with Molly and wondering if it will still work if Signal leaves the EU, but am also worried about its updates to patch vulnerabilities in a timely manner. I appreciate the help I am a “Jack of all trades and master of none” when it comes to these types of programs, but am also the go to currently in my unit since I am somewhat knowledgeable about exploits and attacks that can compromise systems would be great if there was an desktop as well (like Signal) and would also be nice if it was FOSS and auditable ( I know that’s kind of redundant ) I know it’s a tall order to ask but figured I would try. I really appreciate the help so much and hope I did things by the rules here and don’t get flamed if this has already been covered ( I searched but my skills with searching the fediverse is low

    • Session was forked from Signal and given more privacy; it may feel more natural. In addition, features Signal has (over SimpleX):

      • multi-device synchronization. You can use your (same) account on multiple devices, and have conversations synced. While SimpleX states they’d like to implement this, it isn’t even on the roadmap yet. For us, this was the most important requirement that decided in favor of Session.
      • desktop support. While I love SimpleX’s CLI client (and lament that Session doesn’t have one), it was more important for our group to have a GUI desktop application. If everyone in your group is comfortable with entirely command-based interactions (think “ftp”), or if you’ll only ever use mobile devices, this may not be an issue for you. For us, with non-technical people in the chat, a GUI client on the desktop was another requirement that factored heavily in favor of Session.
      • gifs! Ok, not a critical feature, but on the desktop, Session has some nice quality-of-life features, such as a searchable animate gif tool, and searchable emoticon selection.

The single biggest missing feature of Session is that there’s no editing of sent messages. There is redaction, for self and for group (I’ve never understood the value of a “delete-only-for-me” feature), but no editing. This would seem to be a glaring omission of a basic, common feature - and it is. Not as glaring as lack of multi-device synchronization, though.

I look forward to the development of SimpleX, but it’s not quite there yet.
