Yeah kinda. It has roots in christian fanaticism where masturbation=bad. It also had some roots in faux masculinity stuff like how they said not masturbating increases testosterone (it doesn’t). It’s one of those things where on the surface it may seem silly and goofy but if you delve down deep enough you get bad shit.

To make it abundantly clear, No Nut November was always a satirical thing. That’s how it was intended to start with and it didn’t have any of that masculinity nonsense attached to it. After it started getting traction though people started injecting in all kinds of insanity into it and it almost got completely co-opted by extreme far-right nutjobs. Rolling Stone even put out an article saying as much.

          1. Make dumb joke.
          2. Others join in.
          3. Some of them don’t know it’s a joke.
          4. More of them don’t know it’s a joke.
          5. Holy shit there are a lot of you.
          6. A new movement is born.

Thanks, 4Chan. Turns out there ARE consequences to certain varieties of edgy humor when you don’t know how batshit insane the other people on your website are.

I mean the origins are relevant when the person I was directly responding to originally did not make that distinction. Even if we were talking in the broader sense, the origins ALWAYS matter because it can tell you a lot about how things progress and change. The interactions with various different groups or variables. I’m going to go ahead and make sure I’m at least aware of their origins so I can say that i’m educated on the subject instead of blindly stumbling around sharing misinformation.

Also, maybe don’t jump into the middle of someone elses conversation and then try to dictate what is and isn’t relevant to it. You are not part of it and you do not get a say. I’m out.

It was used as a method to promote awareness but that wasn’t the original intent. It was just simply a joke that got insanely out of hand. The Chastity thing you’re talking about is actually an October thing called Locktober. Some people do carry over into November but the kink community in general uses October.

Yeah. I might not be into the kink but, I can respect that people are doing Locktober for safe, sane, and consentual pleasure-related reasons. NNN was a joke originally (like the “fap roulette” challenges of yore) but definitely subverted for some pretty nefarious reasons, using shame and sexual frustration to try to radicalize people into right-wing misogyny and violence.

              It’s really fucking weird.

Imagine thinking that decreasing pornography consumption isn’t essentially the main focus of NoFap/NNN. Most members of those communities care a lot more on the pornography part than they do the orgasming component (excluding the schizos who go on about getting superpowers from semen retention)

The exploitation of woman is a real problem. But you’d be hard-pressed to find a lot of medical professionals who are entirely against porn. Unless you’re actually having an addiction, there is nothing wrong with porn. Just make sure you get it from the right sources.

Not what I said. All I said is that no professional prescribes pornography as any sort of medical advice and the prevailing attitude towards pornography in the medical world is to encourage people to consume it as a little as possible and limit exposure of it from teenagers and young adults. Coincidentally, these are by far the two largest consumer demographics of porn

Never heard of this ‘prevailing attitude’ and it does not make any sense either. What kind of harm could watching porn do to young adults and teens if it’s something almost universally done by them for multiple generations? They mostly tuned out fine anyways, again excluding addicts.

Weird how these people care so much about women in porn being exploited but don’t seem to care about the ones just being trafficked for sex that isn’t filmed. Or child labor. Or the various migrants being trafficked and enslaved for non-secual labor around the world.

It’s almost like they’re grasping for socially-acceptable justification for hating something they don’t like for non-socially-acceptable reasons…

Weird how this never came up in the entirety of my Psych degree. It’s almost as if you’ve no idea what you’re on about.

Spoiler alert: you’re not gonna find a DSM entry for “porn addiction” because there’s a lot of debate over whether or not it’s even truly an addiction by clinical standards. If it’s interfering with your life to the point that you want to stop, can’t, and it’s damaging your relationships and life goals, THEN you have an issue. The WHO just lumps that in with a lot of things under the heading of “Compulsive Sexual Behavior” but there’s literally nothing special about porn.

A certain percentage of the population are going to develop problem behaviors with it do to a complex suite of physiological and cognitive factors, but that’s all.

Edit: Here from an actual medical source

We found a significant negative association between reported pornography hours per week and gray matter volume in the right caudate (P < .001, corrected for multiple comparisons) as well as with functional activity during a sexual cue–reactivity paradigm in the left putamen (P < .001). Functional connectivity of the right caudate to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was negatively associated with hours of pornography consumption.

Here’s who reviewed the article. What specific issues do you have with it and her credentials? On what basis do you believe you are more qualified to make judgements on this topic than Dr. Casarella? What are YOUR credentials?

Are you claiming to have conducted an appropriate literature review or did you just shop around for a single journal article that sorta kinda supports what you think?

While we’re at it, perhaps you could explain how the study’s results support your beliefs?

How does the exact volume gray matter (a decrease, actually) relate? What was the size of the effect?

Imagine building an identity around suppressing something your body does naturally. It’d be like getting mad that we have to poop. Incels feel alone for making such ridiculous life choices that result in self imposed isolation.

A lot of people who got wrapped up in NNN (and incels and fascists movements aside) are lost young men who want to be loved. It all goes back to mens health issues. I think the best resource for guys who see or saw NNN as a solution is Healthygamer.GG the YouTube channel and discord. Seriously so many people there had tried it. Looking for discipline, strength, control over a chaotic neurodivergent mind. There are solutions.

It’s weird since it’s specifically about ejaculating from masturbation. Apparently ejaculating during sex is totes different. Though I find it funny that many who preach it haven’t even considered sex.
