    It fails to determine my location for some reason, after I give access. Is that expected at this stage? I can’t wait to stop using google maps.

      Not sure what could be the cause, are you using a custom Android ROM?

        Yes, with microg. Now that you mention it, OSMAnd has the same problem, perhaps organic maps and osm use a different api from gmaps.
