Only reason to bring r/pics now instead of April 1st was to drive the engagement, and by looks of it Reddit succeeded immensely in that.
They baited people and everyone bit it.
I don’t think anyone at Reddit cares what message is passed through this as long as they get traffic.
They are like Velma of social media
I never actually visited r/place, but it seems like it’s just drawball copied by Reddit. Is that accurate?
Higher traffic stats means higher user engagement. It helps with higher valuation for the IPO.
If you want to hurt them, remove your content, do a GDPR request, and disengage. Focus on the Fediverse instead.
Reddit does not care. It’s just engagement for them.
They only waited one year when we had to wait 5 years for the previous one. No they’re fooling us
That’s what I don’t get. How could they think that this wouldn’t happen?
I’m not sure I totally get it, what happened?
/r/places is a thing on Reddit where people cooperate to make art. People are using that opportunity to lambast Reddit at Reddit’s expense
What is this supposed to accomplish?
“Hey Spez, we’re going to use your site, consume the ads you give us, pay for useless premium features, drive up engagement, and participate in your meaningless events but fuck you so take that” - average Redditor
that used to be the average redditor
I would say the average has gotten much much worse if morons like me got fed up with the greedy little pigboy
The only difference now is the “fuck spez” part. All those redditors aren’t redditors anymore.
Except they are still redditors, it requires an account to place pixels.
Doesn’t matter, it drives user engagement and website traffic. Easy way to show to advertisers that Reddit is very much alive. They don’t care what is drawn, as long as it’s nothing illegal or bad for advertisers. People want to spend 24h to write “fuck u/spez”? Sure, whatever.
“Fuck” is not good for advertisers.
Sure, American advertisers don’t like that, but foul language is all over Reddit, so that’s not something that will drive advertisers away that would otherwise consider advertising on Reddit.
“No such thing as bad publicity” comes to mind.
At the end of the day, ragebait is still ragebait, and brings in clicks (as well as ad revenue)…
i was there, placed a cube, happy with my adblocker and left for my daily 10 minute dose of modcoord where i look at the first one or two post and answer questions about lemmy
Yeah, this was well played from reddit, they knew that r/place was one of the most popular things reddit ever did, so luring people back with it is excellent plan. They don’t care shit about the fuck spez texts, they can now say that they broke engagement records, even without third party api’s.
Yeah, so true as long as there’s engagement ,that’s all that matters to them.
Right? It reminds me of those popular twitter right wingers that get exposure from negative publicity. People feel so smug and proud that they “dunked” on this loser who would otherwise be ignored and forgotten and instead they amplify and magnify the message.
Going about as I expected.
Nope. They have brought in the corporate ghoul consultants. There is no context or feeling the situation. Just “oh, this was really popular last time, let’s continue milking it, what could go wrong”.
I wonder if there are any shared canvas things like this outside of Reddit? The idea is pretty neat.
I remember Drawball being pretty popular on 4chan back in the mid 2000s. It was a lot of fun.
https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/sites/drawball
Someone has done a similar thing here: https://drawball.io
There was a website that did this like 20 years ago. Hell if I can find it. Was called something like the one million project.
The Million Dollar Homepage. Some guy made a 1000x1000 canvas and sold every pixel for $1. Lots of dot-com tech companies bought little banners and stuff.
The flags are so braindead. Who gives a fuck about your country?
Some people are proud, or want to show representation
And as a citizen of one of these countries I say that’s fucking dumb.
um, excuse me sweaty, but imaginary lines on the earth are the most important thing imaginable and we must worship them!
also: /s because i am not being serious
Normally, I would agree with you. But, I would like to offer a different point of view simply because this is a platform on the internet where the vast majority of the users seem to be from the US.
On a project like r/place, I kind of see that as a showing of people saying hey, we use this site, we are here everyday, there’s lots of us, and we’re from this country!
Yeah, I find it frightening. It indicates a lot of blind nationalism on a fairly passionate level. Nothing good comes from that.
Blind nationalism is certainly bad, but I don’t really think that’s the reason all the flags are so numerous and big:
- Your average redditor is on r/place and wants to place a dot on something. However, you can imagine they participate casually and aren’t joining any of the designated subreddits or whatever to coordinate their effort. So what is the lowest hanging fruit they can do to place a dot?
- They can fix or contribute to an already existing artwork. However, to do that they already need to know what the artwork is supposed to look like. Well, flags are well known and generally easy to reproduce
- In fact, some flags, such as Germany or France, are endlessly reproducable, and you can just keep infinitely expanding horizontally or vertically, contributing to the size of these monstrosities
- But maybe you still want to contribute to something that resonates with you, instead of just a blue corner or a black void. Maybe lots of communities want to put artwork on place, but your average user will still probably resonate more with their identity as a German or American more than their identity as a subscriber of r/aww
- Finally, all of these factors spiral. Maybe a reddit user is a fan of r/HydroHomies, and it just so happens they’re making an icon. But the user doesn’t know about this because it’s too small to pick out, and if they did they’re afraid they’d just mess up the design, but the flag of Germany is right there, so might as fill in the bits on the end of the rectangle that aren’t straight yet.
TL;DR: r/place is just conducive to flags. also i had 10 mins to burn so i wrote all this for some reason idk
oh god it’s pathetic… I remember very well the first r/place, then the second one was super cool too! But this one, wow, super pathetic :-( shame on reddit…
The text in the german flag area translates to
u/spez is a son of a removed
“Offspring of a harlot”
What a joke is this the US? For europeans these swear words are fine. u/spez ist ein HÜR3ns0hn
No, it translate to “son of a prostitute”.
Hmm. Testing to see: removed.
That’s crazy, it even blocks my ex wife’s name.
Ladies and/or gentlemen, this is a historic moment: the second coming of hunter2.
What’s “*******”?
It’s blocks your wife’s name, too? Sometimes else try.
For anyone who wants to swear in german, just say
who rain zone
But fast
I’d say ran is a bit closer than rain, but either way, that’s still very English German.
male descendant of a prostitute.
u/spez is a son of bïtch
Is b word not allowed on lemmy.ml?
It isn’t allowed, but I don’t think my instance bans bitch
Well, I can only see “removed” instead of whatever you were trying to convey.
I can see b!tch
Aight, then it’s visual based on the instance, I guess. Which I would say isn’t useful at all, it’s the Scunthorpe problem and euphemism treadmill (see people saying corn, unalive, et cetera). Oh well…
Hunter2
Just fyi, i used the w word because it is the most accurate translation. Hurensohn means Sohn einer Hure, Son einer Hure, Son of a Hure, Son of a removed
Iirc, lemmy.ml is a specifically leftist instance, right? They may have banned the word because of its sexist nature. A bit like allowing fuck, but not allowing the other f word that generally applies to gay men. Swearing isn’t the issue, slurs or derogatory terms are.
Small test: Dio porco Cunt Vaffanculo Hurensohn Dickhead
deleted by creator
That’s pretty gay
Sincerely, a gay dude
Yeah it’s censored :/
Well how am I supposed to reference a female dog then?
A heccin’ G O O D G I R L E, obviously.
I would say /u/spez, but that seems mean to the dog.
slurs in general are not allowed on lemmy.ml
Das glaub ich nicht Hurensohn
Changing it to “removed” instead just drives the euphemism treadmill faster, people will find ways to say the same without those specific words. Whether something is a slur is also very context-dependent. Something computers as of yet aren’t well equipped to handle.
You can swear on the internet. Violence? Gore? No problem!
A bad word? Son of a removed, we’re all going to die.
Edit: Wtf, there is a swear filter? Fuck.
Kyle’s mom’s a bitch…
Interesting. You can say fuck but son of a bitch is censored… what about son of a fuck?
Fuck a bitch maybe?
But my point was that ‘bitch’ was being censored in his comment, but not ‘fuck’
So it’d still be fuck a removed
Plus I gotta be honest, not a fan of that one. Like how people aren’t a fan on moist.
Might be it doesn’t filter edits
Oh yeah hadn’t thought of that
Time to switch to a different instance you fucking fuck face!
What pearl clutching son of a bitch at lemmy.ml decided its users were too fragile to hear the word “bitch”? And here’s the real question, can you read ot or does it censor mine? Because if you can read it then what’s the point of censoring your own users?
Edit: yeah Kbin lets you say it.
Nobody can read it, check the source of your comment. The word gets immediately replaced when you post. I’d like to know what words are forbidden, is there a list somewhere?
Just to test how the filter behaves: Bi.tch.
Test of the instance slur filter, please ignore:
bitchy, retard, cock
I can read every swear in this thread except the root post.
Just move on to a better instance that isn’t run by tankies. Problem solved.
Nobody can read it, check the source of your comment.
Correction: No one browsing through your specific server can read it. The rest of us see it just fine.
From where I’m sitting, it seems like the filter is applied (a) when a lemmy.ml user makes a post (it strips it from the source and says removed for everyone) and (b) when lemmy.ml federates the comment over (source instance has the word intact, ONLY you guys don’t see it).

The filter is a text matching regex, and not terribly verbose. Very easy to circumvent
If the swear is posted on kbin, and viewed on kbin, it is not censored. Which is why I can view ‘bitch’ when posted by kbin folks. And I assume they can read mine.
That’s how the Fediverse works. That word is constantly used in inflammatory comments. Don’t like the rules, then leave.
Or stay and rightfully criticize the instances that use words filters.
Here’s a wild idea: word filters are the most brain-dead way to deal with a problem. They don’t understand context – you can’t even use a “bad word” so people understand what you’re denouncing. You can’t share your experience with being called a removed.
They’re also easily bypassed with odd spellings by people that are going to use a “no no word” to be assholes.
It’s the clbuttic mistake
No, it’s not how “the Fediverse works” it’s how lemmy.ml works.
I meant how the fediverse works as in each instance can have its own rules and if you don’t like the rules you find a different instance.
It works based on instance.
looks like tankies love censorship, who would have guessed
Time to switch to a different instance you fucking fuck face!
Funny, fuck isn’t censored but bitch is
It’s “whore”, not “bitch.”
Ah gotcha. Makes a bit more sense I guess whore could be considered a slur
Users have even gone full French revolution but admins are quite obviously blanking it out every few minutes with a db overwrite.
Very onbrand for the french
