Donald Trump was ridiculed Saturday after attending what his campaign called a Black roundtable at a Detroit church — with photos showing a largely white audience.

Trump’s campaign reached out to the 180 Church to set up the event at which attendees asked a handful of questions before bursting into a rendition of Happy Birthday.

The evangelical church is in the heart of Detroit’s west side and has a mainly Black congregation.

But photos caught by the media, and shared widely online, showed a lot of white people in the audience.

It’s historically disrespectful for (men) to wear a hat indoors in quite a few buildings. That guy there looks like he’d be old enough to know better.

And iirc the historical reason it’s not disrespectful for women to keep their hat on is that hats were much more integrated into women’s hairdos. So, it’d be a whole production of removing hat pins, re-arranging curls, etc.

That’s an interesting theory but there are many churches where women are supposed to put on a hat especially for church.

Probably it has more to do with this rather ridiculous passage from Corinthians:

Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.

5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. 6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. Source 1 Corinthians 11: 2-16

No. If you have hair, it needs to be covered. If you don’t cover it, then you ought to shave it. But women shouldn’t shave their heads. So they should wear hats. But if you don’t have hair, you shouldn’t wear a hat.

That might be part of it and seems practical. I think another was that men taking off a helmet/lifting a visor was a thing - similar to (possible?) origins of the handshake - military men signifying they mean no harm.

Norms change over time - used to be, until JFK, there was even more rituals conformed to around men and hats until he came along. JFK was apparently blamed for men mostly abandoning the hat, but apparently that was building before he came along…in today’s world, I don’t know that it makes a whole lot of sense for something decorative like a hat to have all these rules only apply to one gender…might have been a time when someone got the vapors over a guy not removing his hat when he entered a library, church, etc…but I suppose that sort of thing is fading nearly daily. People don’t always wear a suit and tie everywhere, either…

While it doesn’t really exude “classy” vibes to have some guy sitting in a church wearing a hat, or, even worse, a hat with a slogan most Americans associate with a hate group, but if violating fading fashion norms was all these people were doing, I doubt too many would care.

      Literally since day one.

Remember the origin of “Alternative Facts?”. It was Kellyanne Conway on Meet the Press Sunday after Trumps inauguration. She was claiming that despite the rain, crowds were bigger than Obama’s, even though photos and transit statistics say otherwise.

Really set the tone for the rest of the administration.

This joke only makes sense to you because you have zero understanding of what is meant by people when they use this phrase. All you have to do is spend 30 mins or less listening to the perspective of the other side and you will have the context necessary to realize this “joke” is nonsensical.

      You won’t though.

I wanted to find out why the fuck they invited him:

“For him to have a community conversation, I thought it was an opportunity to be able to really give the least of these, the disenfranchised and marginalized, an opportunity to have a voice at the table because typically we’re on the menu,” Sewell said. “If you come to Grand River, if you walk through our community, you will see, quite frankly, that it’s desolate. … (Trump campaign officials) didn’t want to talk to people that had high prestige and high power positions. They wanted to talk to the least of these.”

    https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2024/06/15/detroit-church-hosting-donald-trump-for-roundtable-faces-criticism/74093920007/

And it’s not like he supports trump or hates Biden:

“I let (the Trump campaign) know clearly that I don’t endorse any candidate,” Sewell said. “I’m a pastor. I can’t trade, my spiritual influence for political influence.”

In an op-ed on the digital divide published last year in the Free Press, Sewell praised Democratic elected officials such as Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their infrastructure bill. At 180 Church, he and other leaders created a computer lab and offer classes for adult literacy, computer training and resume-writing, Sewell said.

People have serious issues and want to be heard, but Biden is too busy dining with George Clooney in California than campaigning in Michigan…

And like, am I the only one that forgets Hillary’s victory lap and focus on big donors instead of boots on the ground campaigning being one of the reason we already got stuck with trump for four years?

Why are we just doing it again? This is 2016 all over but people are too scared of hurting Biden if he continues that they wont ring an alarm bell.

Biden and recently Harris have been to Detroit and he will probably be back before then.

Trump is endorsedby convicted felon and former mayor Kwame. A person who literally stole money from the pockets of the poor to enrich his life in one of America’s poorest and wrecked city. Guess what? A Biden supporter became mayor and has helped give Detroit hope and pride they haven’t had in a while.

        This happens a lot unfortunately.

I’m not saying trump would be good, trump would be fucking terrible.

I’m saying he’s doing a better job at voter outreach, and the quoted comments illustrate how low of a bar Biden needs to clear to get voters to vote for him.

Biden and recently Harris have been to Detroit and he will probably be back before then.

Can you link when Biden was there?

The only thing I’m getting was hubknobbing with the wealthy at an EV show where he got to drive an electric Corvette and that was like two years ago

If he has actually been doing voter outreach in Detroit this cycle, I’d love to hear about it. Would make me feel a lot better he’s actually going to be at trump.

        Edit:

        Kwame Kilpatrick

Had to Google him, he’s a disgraced former mayor of Detroit that trump let out of jail.

He still owes Detroit millions, I’m not sure why his endorsement of trump matters to (or surprises) anyone.

        https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwame_Kilpatrick

Although he is a good example of what “blue no matter who” gets us. Everyone seems to have hated him immediately, but it was him or a Republican so he could do whatever he wanted for years…

Biden was in Detroit on May 19.

Hello, Detroit.  My name is Joe Biden, and I’m a lifetime member of the NAACP.  (Applause.)

He also visited Saginaw, MI in March.

During the President’s visit, Saginaw area residents Hurley Coleman III and his son 13-year-old Hurley Coleman IV got the chance to have a personal conversation with the President.

          And Warren, MI in February.

Again, I ask you, since you hate Biden so much, who is viably capable to win November rust’s in the ru bing right now as an alternative?

All you need to do is name someone that has a fair to good chance of winning the White House.

One name. That’s Al you need to do.

Otherwise, just stop man. Because constantly spreading bullshit about someone when the focus isn’t even on them is clearly illustrating your purpose here.

Got called out for your bullshit here, I see. Biden is spreading it around, as other posters have said, touring this massive country of 300+ million fucking people as best as one man possibly can. And while I’m not thrilled with everything he’s done, I’m still voting for him. Why? Because it’s the best thing to do. I should do it. And so should you. Fuck off with the bullshit already. November is a choice between two visions for America. One gets us in line with other countries by reining in Student Loan payments, improving our infrastructure, and generally making progress fast enough to affect us in this lifetime, while not giving the Right extra motivation to go hate-vote our guys and gals out, and the Centre more motivation to stay home, vote third party, or even join the Right in voting our guys and gals out. The other…is fucking Project 2025. Go look that shit up if you don’t know about it. Apparently 2/3rds of the country doesn’t realise how much of a threat it really is.

If he has actually been doing voter outreach in Detroit this cycle, I’d love to hear about it. Would make me feel a lot better he’s actually going to be at trump.

Can you provide a source for him doing voter outreach in Detroit then?

I tried your link, but that’s some blog thing. Not a source for Biden in Detroit.

        Edit:

Seriously, I’d be really really happy to hear about it…

I don’t know why you think I’m trying to offend Biden by saying this would help his campaign. If someone does provide a link about recent campaigning in Detroit (or any other poor disenfranchised area). I’d be a lot less worried he’s gonna be able to beat Trump.

I don’t know why so many people think questioning Biden’s campaign strategy means I want him to lose.

Apparently I’ve blocked that account at some point in the last year.

So I never see anything that account says.

I’ve got a couple instances blocked too. But with a blocked instance you see comments but don’t get notifications.

Like, you’re from lemmy.ml, and I blocked that instance a while ago. So if you reply, I won’t notice unless I happen to come back to this page and see it. I only noticed this one because someone else made another reply about the same time you did.

I didn’t know that would happen when I blocked .ml, I was just tired of accidentally wandering into a .ml sub. Kind of a happy surprise tho.

But my point is, don’t just assume what you see on Lemmy is what other people are seeing. Especially if they’re not your instance.

Fair, but I frankly find your original assertions rather thin given this evidence (which would likely have come up in a quick google search)

It makes it easy to believe that your goal is a Trump presidency, not fair criticism of Dems or Biden, regardless of whether this specific post was hidden from you. I doubt they did any deep sleuthing to come up with those photos and articles.

I use duckduckgo rather than Google.

You can try for yourself and see what happens when you search “Biden Detroit” it’s just from when he drove that EV Vette.

Now, had I narrowed the search down to only results from 2024, I probably would have seen that.

But I didn’t. I’m killing time when I have a free minute here and there. I assumed that it would put a recent visit on the top.

It makes it easy to believe that your goal is a Trump presidency

It could very well be that I’ve blocked the few that are on Lemmy, but I can’t remember the last time I saw a pro-trump comment on here.

Like, there was a conservative sub on another instance, but when a mod told me that accusing someone of racism was racist, I reported their comment for racism.

Because logically, accusing someone of racism for accusing someone of racism is still racism by their own rules.

I got a 3 day ban from my own instance for that somehow. Which seemed a little excessive for trying to prove a point. So obviously I blocked that community and don’t see it anymore.

But anyways, I think with the lack of actual trump supporters on Lemmy, people go looking for an argument. So when I talk about stuff like:

Biden doing ______ would help him win, he should do ______"

If I’m wrong and Biden has ever done _____ people want to turn it into some kind of “slam”.

There’s just not enough trumpets for people to argue with here.

People are just angry and want someone to take it out on.

Biden doing ______ would help him win, he should do ______"

In all seriousness, were these not your words?

People have serious issues and want to be heard, but Biden is too busy dining with George Clooney in California than campaigning in Michigan…

That whole blah blah blah George Clooney thing is damn near a quote of my maga brother in law, but setting that aside, I don’t really think that is the same tone as your madlib.

                  Edit: Quoted the wrong madlib.

Edit2: I’ve gone way deeper than I intended in this discussion. I think we get where each other stands, and that’s good enough!

People replying to you aren’t being petty, you carry yourself in a very aggressive way and I don’t think you realize it.

You made up a narrative without any evidence to back it up, people corrected you with references, but you ignore them because you’ve blocked any view that causes your blood pressure to rise.

People are responding to you like this because you present yourself absurdly and then defend it absurdly.

One of the few posters I honestly think is a troll, I’m just not sure if you realize it or not.
