It depends tho. Overthrowing an authoritarian is usually considered a good thing. But mostly, it only depends on the success of the coup. Successful coup = we were heroes. Unsuccessful coup = they were traitors.

Unless it succeeds. Most Mericans today think the revolutionaries are heros cuz freedom, but at the time there were plenty of people who were against splitting from England. Now this is more like being a Confederate sympathiser, and that tracks perfectly.

It’s framing. For the next coup. Because there will be a next one. The Nazis didn’t win their first coup either.

Hitler was only sentenced to 5 years in prison despite being convicted of treason. He lived in comfort and wrote his famous book there.

The 60-day, nine-month, and time-served sentences make a mockery of justice and a tragedy of history. 20 years is about right if not a bit lenient for plotting what would have gotten someone hanged, drawn, and quartered at the time of our country’s founding.

Just to add on to that. He served 9 months and was released on good behaviour. A reminder he spent those 9 months writing a manifesto that promoted genocide. I hope we can learn from history.

Imagine thinking Sarah Palin was someone whose thoughts were worth more than the wretched air they’re made of.

Sarah Palin knows what’s going on, because she reads ALL THE PAPERS! /s

Non Violent!? They were calling for the hanging/execution of several politicians, with instructions and directions to go get them! 6 people DIED!!! Those that were truly non violent, got much more lenient penalties than the 17-22 years the leaders got.

Sarah Palin is batshit insane calling these people good guys.

When McCain chose her I remember thinking, “They’ve thrown out the last of the few principles they had. The nutjobs will be the new GOP norm”.

IIRC, McCain didn’t even want her on the ticket, but he did go along with it–embracing the crazy to try and get more votes. There were many missteps that led to today’s chaos, but I always felt this was a big turning point.

And look how they treated him at the end! As so many other things Republican, their behavior towards McCain lead by Trump was despicable.

But McCain had a shred of humanity and honor, and there is no place for that in the new GOP.

She’s on something, not insane. Most of the drawls I hear coming from the far right is coming from some kind of drug or alcohol. It’s probably so they can sleep at night and then it’s a never ending loop.

Wait, The “Good Guys” were not the capital police fighting to protect Congress and the constitutional procedure taking place? The capital police who stood up to the deadly mob worked up by Trump and aimed at senators doing the work of the constitution…they were not the “Good Guys”?

Palin is wrong and not a “good guy”.

You’re almost there. It’s because they’re liars (the politicians / boosters). Tribalism is reserved for their base. The leaders are cynical af.

You think Tucker is genuinely perplexed by the issues he talks about with interviewees? Don’t worry, that’s a rhetorical question. I know Lemmy users aren’t idiots. Just making a point.

Unfortunately, some Lemmy users are idiots. Had a discussion with a person who thinks unions are the worst thing to happen to workers, and would not understand that they’re the reason we have weekends. The person probably wants slaves.

The people who want to bring back slavery assume they won’t be the slaves. If they aren’t billionaires then they are making a big assumption.

These are the same dingbats that have made Ashli Babbitt a martyr (and have doxxed the man who shot her) and never can answer the question. Just what the f— was she even doing there that day?

Not one of the people that cry about her and pretend to be so very concerned about it can answer why she was even there. Of course, this is the same bunch that think killing someone over selling loose cigarettes (if they are Black) is NBD.
